When Should You Send Save the Dates?
Straightforward timings for save the dates, including destination weddings, short engagements and what to do if you have already told people.
The usual timings
Local wedding: send six to eight months before the day.
Destination wedding or a date near a holiday: send nine to twelve months before, because guests are booking flights and time off.
Short engagement, under six months: skip the save the date and send the invitation itself as soon as the venue is confirmed.
What to put on it
Both first names, the date, the town or venue and the words 'invitation to follow'. That is the whole job.
Do not put ceremony times, dress code or RSVP details on a save the date — those change, and the invitation is where they belong.
Only send to people you will invite
A save the date is a commitment. Confirm your guest list and venue capacity first, because you cannot uninvite someone who has already booked a hotel.
