How to Create a Wedding Seating Chart
A practical method for building a wedding seating chart, how to lay out the board so guests find their name quickly, and when to print it.
Build the list first
Wait until RSVPs are in, then group guests by how they know you: family, school, work, your partner's side.
Fill tables from the middle of the room outward, and seat anyone with mobility needs near the door.
Lay the board out to be read
Group names by table, in table order, with the table name or number as a clear heading. Alphabetical name lists work only on very large weddings with a separate 'find your table' board.
Two to four columns is the sweet spot. More than four and guests crowd the board.
Names should be readable from roughly a metre away — around 18pt on an A1 board.
Print late
Leave it as late as your printer allows. Late changes are normal, and a chart printed two weeks out will need reprinting.
